The Generac GP6500- 6500-Watt Gasoline Powered Portable Generator is a solid performing back-up power unit that has been easy to start (usually 1 crank), is very portable, runs smoothly under no-load and loaded conditions and offers a top tank gas gauge that indicates remaining fuel left. With a 10ft 10AWG NEMA L14-30 Cord, a NEMA L14 weather proof internal installed outside Plug and a NEC Article 702 ANSI\NFPA 70 generator 2-pole El. Panel Interlock kit, was able to provide whole house generation (with minimal power management) while running a 12K BTU window unit, 2 refrigerators, 1 freezer, a gas dryer and all of the lighting in a 2800sf home! From unboxing the GP6500 to ready-to-power the home only took an hour for wheel\leg, dual carry handle installs, adding engine oil (1L provided) and gassing up the tank! After powering our home for 3 hours for generator break-in and testing power usage circuits, under no-load conditions closed the gas tank valve to allow the carburetor to run dry…now ready for monthly test runs or future power outage emergencies!!
Pros: All In One, Durable, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, Strong, Sturdy

After doing some extensive research The Generac GP 6500 is a top quality Generator for all your power needs. Whether your a contractor or home owner looking for an emergency power source this generator fits the profile. It is a pull start motor and started on the first pull. Instructions on assembly and operation are clear and easy to understand. I took me about a 1/2 hour to assemble with some sockets and wrenches. Your pretty much assembling the handle and wheels. Everything else is factory assemble and ready to go. All you have to do is add the provided engine oil and add 87 octane or above gasoline. On a test run I was able to power my interior lights, 28 cu.ft.refrigerator, 7.0 cu. ft. freezer and according to my calculations should have plenty of watts to fire up my oil burner and Amitrol water heater. For a more permanent solution I have purchased a Generac Home Link Transer Switch. Highly recommend this generator.
Pros: All In One, Durable, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, Strong, Sturdy, Easy Instructions, easy assembly

Generac builds a first class portable generator. This unit is simple, but packed with the features you really need. It is manual start with a recoil pull cord. Mine started on the very first pull. The unit requires very little assembly, just the wheels and handle to attach. You do have to add oil to the crankcase before the first start, but they include all the supplies to do it. Comes with a 1 liter bottle of startup oil good for the first 30 hours. Also included is a funnel for adding the oil. Very thoughtful. After that, use a good synthetic oil and change after 100 hours. Uses regular gas, 87 octane. Has a runtime clock and alarms to alert when service is required. Five separate electrical outlets with separate breakers available for the loads you need to supply. Instruction book includes a guide to determine how much load and how many appliances you can run simultaneously. This is a high quality unit.
Pros: Durable, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, Long-Lasting, Sturdy

Appears to be that everything that’s been said about this generator is true. Easy to unpack. Easy to assemble. Easy to oil and fuel. Started on the second pull. Runs well and have all the confidence that when that first hurricane hits, we’ll be in great shape with this generator.

A tip for the next owner buying this item. You must put the circuit breaker on 30 amp in order to have output for 120 volt.

I haven’t had this generator very long, but so far it seems to be very good at its job. First thing’s first though–the assembly is somewhat annoying. You don’t have much to assemble–rubber feet, handle, and wheels–but the instructions are really inadequate. It was not clear to me that you have different sized bolts for different tasks, so I had to take a couple things apart before getting everything right. Nothing is mentioned in the instructions about the plastic washers, so I assumed they go with the handle. I may be wrong. You’ll want at least a 12mm, 10mm, and 13mm wrench or sockets, needle nose pliers, and a vise grip. The vise grip is for the cotter pin for the wheels, which are basically impossible to secure without that third hand clamping them there. Anyhow, after getting this assembled, it took me a minute to figure out the starting process–again, the instructions are pretty bare boned and the schematic instructions on the generator itself are not very helpful. The real sticking point for me was figuring out which direction was proper to start the choke. It turns out you want the choke facing the outside of the generator for starting. After running it for 30 seconds or so, turn it toward the inside of the generator. Now, all that aside, once the generator gets running, it does so magnificently. It is fairly loud, but quieter than your average gas lawn mower. I haven’t got it hooked up to my house electric yet, but have used it to power some of my shop equipment, and it barely makes a peep. It downshifted very briefly when powering up my table saw, but that’s drawing about 1200 watts to start, so not unexpected. Overall, I’m really happy with this generator and look forward to getting the appropriate wiring so it can be backup power for my appliances during blackouts.

I had to exchange it due to a weak 30 amp breaker. It will trip before the 20 amp breaker. I was impressed with the engine that started with the first pull.

The generator works fine, the handle is a bear to install. I still don’t think it’s right. Do you have a detailed diagram for this thing.

Great product, it performs very well with the transfer switch for this unit. It was delivered right on time, no damage and what little assembly there is it was very simple. Thanks Home Depot for being there when I need you.

Started right up! Haven’t used the home transfer (need to get separate hardware) but did use it during a power outage out of the outlets and powered fridge, lights, computers no problem. Pretty loud, though- don’t expect the db’s to be anywhere near as low as a Honda- but overall am satisfied with this product
